The Cornwall'98 Venue Directory

SECTION 4

4.0 Cornwall’s Premier Event Venues

This section details the premier locations around the county for watersports events of all kinds.

It is hoped that each event venue has been discussed on individual merits, rather than in comparison to other, perhaps larger and more experienced venues.

Note that the following listings are the main sites for staging events and because some locations are not listed here does not mean that they are particularly unsuitable. It has been necessary, due to the proliferation of excellent watersports locations to pick out a selection, representing each district of Cornwall and a variety of different watersports.

To be brief, watersports have been categorised; sailing is used generally to include the smallest of dinghy sailing classes to cruisers and any sport that needs a wind such as windsurfing. Surfing includes all the related disciplines such as body boarding, long boarding and also wave sailing which needs a swell, as well as wind.

When discussing event centres a number of important factors have been assessed.

  • suitability for type of event or events
  • quality of facilities
  • ease of access to competition site
  • capacity to hold large crowds
  • quality of water, beach, harbour and slipways
  • nearby accommodation for competitors
  • availability of car parking for spectators and competitors
  • ease of obtaining services
  • preventative or prohibitive by-laws to the event
