SPORTS

Cricket. The Newquay Cricket Club welcomes visitors to the Newquay Sports Centre, Whitegate Road, Details: (Tel. 875533).

Fishing. For details of fishing and reservoir recreation in the area contact Recreation Office, S.W.W., Exeter (Tel. (01837) 871565). Porth Reservoir (Newquay 4 miles). Coarse fishing for bream, bag weight to 100lb plus best fish 91/2lb, tench to 93/4lb; roach; rudd; carp to 18lb; perch and eels. Permits on site.

Fishing (Sea). The coastline of Newquay provides excellent fishing for bass, mackerel, ray, wrasse, grey mullet and garfish.

Fishing (Deep-sea and shark). Trips with rods and tackle, etc. supplied, available from the Harbour. Also hourly mackerel fishing trips for the family. Numerous species of fish abound off the coast of Newquay, several record-breaking fish having been taken. Four booking offices at the Harbour will answer all enquiries (Tel: 876352 daytime, 873585 evening, summer only) or Harbour Master (872809).

Football. The Newquay Association Football Club opens its season about the middle of August, and visitors are always welcome at home matches in the well-appointed ground off Clevedon Road. Clubhouse facilities. Temporary Membership available.

Gliding. Cornish Gliding Club operates from Trevellas Airfield, Perranporth. Excellent soaring. Club flying each weekend. Courses throughout summer. Visiting pilots welcome. Please check flying times with club.

Golf. Newquay Golf Club. 18 holes, par 69. Visiting club members welcome. Above Fistral Bay. Open for visitors. Clubhouse with Bar, Dining Room, Car Park for Crazy Golf.

Treloy Golf Club. 9 holes. Visitors welcome. (Tel. 878554).
Golf (Crazy). Porth, Tower Road and Trenance Leisure Park.
Pitch and Putt. 9-hole course at Pentire Headland, Trenance Leisure Park and Porth Island.
Putting. Killacourt and Barrowfields.

Riding. Horses can be hired from Trenance Riding Stables, near Trenance Boating Lake. Approved. A.B.R.S. and B.H.S (Tel. Newquay 872699). Visitors welcome.

Road Running. All visitors welcome to run with Newquay Road Runners. Meet Newquay Sports Centre every Wednesday 6.30 p.m. Contact Colin Martin (Tel. 877685).

Rugby. Newquay Hornets Rugby Football Club opens its season from 1st September at Newquay Sports Centre, Tretherras Road; visitors welcome. Honorary Secretary: K.Truscott, 15 Quintrell Road (Tel. 875698).

Sailing.Newquay Sailing Club holds handicap racing in the bay on Sunday evenings. Times vary according to tides. Dinghy-owners may bring their boats, become associate members, compete in the racing and use the Clubhouse. Secretary: S. Harding

Sports Centre. Ample free car parking. Licensed club (open every evening) which welcomes families. (Saturday evenings - country and western evening). Details and temporary membership from Newquay Sports Centre, Newquay (Tel. 875533).

Swimming. The Harbour Sports Association runs a peak season swimming event in the Harbour for various age groups, entry free.
